Johnell (founder of Jubilee Cafe, Co-op Owner #7787)

CGFC: "What is Jubilee Cafe's local community impact?"

Johnell: "Jubilee Cafe provides a free meal each Monday night to University of Illinois students, community members, and neighbors who do not have a permanent address. Unlike many other free meals around CU, guests are served food at their tables, much like at a restaurant. Each meal is prepared on site with as much local food as possible."

CGFC: "What are your greatest needs as an organization?"

Johnell: "Our highest priority needs are for volunteers each week and for spreading the word about what we do. We have about 27 volunteers each week complete various roles to make the meal a success. We are also aware that there are many people in our community who could benefit from a free weekly meal, but may not know about Jubilee Cafe. Increasing our ability to reach more people in need is an important goal for us. People can learn more about us at our Facebook Page Jubilee Café CUCC."

CGFC: "With more funding, how would Jubilee Cafe further its mission?"

Johnell: "Jubilee Cafe is not a Round Up for Good Recipient. We have been nominated for the last two years and we will try to become a recipient in the future. We do benefit by picking up shrink once a week from the Coop. Shrink is food that we can use in our meal preparation each week. If we were to receive Round Up for Good funds, Jubilee Cafe could explore expanding our ability to serve food to more individuals in our community."

CGFC: "How does the Co-op tie into your personal life?"

Johnell: "Personally, I am a member of the co-op and enjoy shopping there for local produce. I also like to come get lunch and sit outside on the patio when the weather allows. My goal for 2019 is to take classes that the Co-op offers. I am always eager to learn how to cook different kinds of food for myself and my family."
